Monitoring of chemical safety is essential in the manufacture of consumer goods. Compliance with international chemical regulations such as RoHS and REACH, for food contact materials and customer specifications are often required. But hazardous substances also pose a risk at the workplace. Our accredited chemical laboratories offer comprehensive testing services and expertise.

Pollutants, mixtures of substances, dusts, fibres, gases, aerosols and vapours can represent a problem in the air at workplaces, even to the point of exceeding workplace limit values. DEKRA offers you comprehensive chemical laboratory services for your required workplace measurements. Also to ensure transport safety and the correct handling of dangerous goods, we support you with laboratory tests for the classification of substances, mixtures, products and waste according to the UN Manual on the Transport of Dangerous Goods.

The correct classification of goods into the respective dangerous goods class is based on special classification and testing procedures recommended in the United Nations (UN) Manual of Tests and Criteria for the Transport of Dangerous Goods. Our laboratory experts determine the physical-chemical substance data you need for safety assessment and transport classification for ADR, RID, IMDG and IATA.
At the workplace, too, many employees regularly come into contact with pollutants, dusts, gases, aerosols or vapours for which obligatory limit values apply and which you as an employer must comply with. It is therefore important to identify and avoid hazardous substances and the resulting potential risks at an early stage. As an accredited testing laboratory according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025, we support you with reliable chemical analyses. In particular, knowledge of the explosion characteristics of dusts is important for the safe handling of these substances. DEKRA also determines relevant values for explosion protection measures.

Comply with customer specifications and international chemical regulations
We support manufacturers and distributors with accredited product testings for harmful substances to meet legal requirements when placing products on the European and international market. This includes testing for Annex 17 limit values of the REACH Regulation EC 1907/2006 and SVHC restrictions. Analyses according to EU-POP-VO (Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 on persistent organic pollutants) are of importance as well. PAHs, phthalate plasticisers, SCCPs, MCCPs and PFAS are critical substances in particular. RoHS conformity in accordance with EU Directive 2011/65/EU is a requirement for the CE marking of an electrical product. In addition, we test for other international markets - such as the US market and in accordance with customer-specific restriction lists.

Specific REACH analyses of articles
The REACH Regulation EC 1907/2006 obliges manufacturers, importers and (online) traders to take responsibility for chemicals used in their articles. In addition, specific substance bans (anx. XVII) apply to articles, especially consumer goods with skin contact, such as PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and phthalate plasticisers. Furthermore, there are information obligations on SVHC substances (art. 33, art. 59). Individual questions regarding SVHC, BPA or PAHs may arise with the recycling of plastics, the contamination of raw materials or the processing of plastics. In particular, specific PAH limit values must be met to obtain the GS mark.
RoHS testing of electrical equipment
The EU Directive 2011/65/EU ("RoHS Directive") defines limit values for brominated flame retardants and heavy metals in electrical appliances. RoHS 3 sets additional limits for phthalate plasticisers (4P). The RoHS limits apply to every homogeneous material. DEKRA offers you efficient testing concepts for initial sampling, for data gaps or for regular sample tests.

Sensory and migration tests for food contact materials and articles
Regulations (EC) 1935/2004 and (EU) No. 10/2011 place high demands on the marketability and safety of articles that come into contact with food. In addition to household articles, kitchen appliances and packaging materials, these also include parts and components in the food processing industry. As a laboratory service provider, we offer you a wide range of analyses for migration tests, specific migrations (SML, NIAS) and sensory tests for your products and materials with food contact (FCM). We also test products with food contact for small children.

In addition to EU requirements for the food safety of FCM, there are many supplementary requirements of individual countries. Food safety in Germany is also regulated in the German Food and Feed Code (LFGB), which sets further requirements, as do the German Commodities Ordinance (BedGgstV) and BfR recommendations. Other country-specific regulations from France, Italy and Denmark must also be met, as well as FDA requirements in the USA and GB requirements in China.

In addition to chemical tests, our interdisciplinary laboratories also offer many mechanical tests of non-food and near-food articles. Films, aluminium foils and bag products for household use are tested for layer thickness, dart drop and tensile strength. For baby and toddler articles with food contact, we offer mechanical safety tests in accordance with accredited and approved methods for the EU and USA in addition to testing for harmful substances.
Ensuring product conformity for international markets
As a manufacturer, trader or importer of non-food articles, you must comply with numerous chemical regulations. With chemical tests for harmful substances, DEKRA examines a wide variety of consumer goods and toys for you to verify marketability. In particular, the safety requirements for toys, children's and baby articles, which must meet requirements according to EU Directive 2009/48/EC, the REACH Regulation and EN 71 are high. On behalf of the quality association for candles, DEKRA also tests household candles and their raw materials for quality and safe burning as well as for obtaining the RAL quality mark GZ 041.

Chemical testing of consumer goods, children's articles and toys
Our chemical experts in the accredited DEKRA laboratory for environmental and product analysis offer you a comprehensive portfolio of product tests as well as hazardous substance analyses, for example for jewellery, decorative items or electrical goods. In addition, we support you in the preparation of test plans with customised test concepts tailored to your articles. With our test spectrum, you can meet the requirements of the Consumer Goods Ordinance (BedGgstV), the EU Toys Directive (2009/48/EC) as well as the regulations from annex 17 of the REACH regulation, POP regulation, individual customer-specific specifications and many other international chemical safety requirements, such as US American standards (CPSIA/CPSC/CP65).
In addition, we use mechanical safety tests to examine the performance characteristics of articles and test material properties regarding technical specifications.
Reduction of fire hazard and pollutant emissions from candles
Too fast or uneven burning, dripping and soot formation can be avoided with tested candles, as can critical concentrations of substances that are harmful to the environment and health. Our laboratory offers you approved tests of raw materials (paraffin, stearin, beeswax, palm oils) and candles for the RAL Quality Mark and according to customer specifications.
